Mia Wasikowska (pronounced /ˌvæʃɨˈkɒvskə/, vash-i-KOV-skə; born October 1989) is an Australian actress, currently working in the United States. She is perhaps best known for her role as Chaya in the Edward Zwick film Defiance.
Life and career
Wasikowska was born and raised in Canberra. Growing up she studied ballet at the Canberra Dance Development Centre, switching to full-time acting in 2006. She has Polish ancestry.
Wasikowska began her acting career in Australia and was nominated for a Young Actor's AFI Award for her role in Suburban Mayhem. She starred in several Australian short films, and also appeared in Rogue, an Australian horror movie.
In the United States, Wasikowska earned critical acclaim for her performance in HBO's In Treatment, playing Sophie, an aspiring Olympic gymnast who is sent to Gabriel Byrne's psychotherapist following a suspected suicide attempt. She followed that up with supporting roles in several American films. Wasikowska appeared in Defiance with Daniel Craig, and played the role of Elinor Smith, a young female aviator opposite Hilary Swank's Amelia Earhart in Amelia. For her performance in the indie That Evening Sun opposite Hal Holbrook, Wasikowska was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.
In July 2008, after a long search, Wasikowska was chosen to play the title role in Tim Burton's interpretation of Alice in Wonderland, alongside Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway. In the film, the White Rabbit leads 19 year old Alice back to a Wonderland she no longer remembers, seeking her help to end the tyrannical rule of the Red Queen who has overthrown her sister, the White Queen. Unlike previous incarnations, Alice will evolve over the course of the new film into a more empowered heroine.
Wasikowska then joined the cast of the indie The Kids Are All Right, playing the daughter of a same-sex couple (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) who, together with her brother, sets out to find the biological father (Mark Ruffalo), throwing the family into turmoil. She is also starring in an untitled Gus Van Sant project, described as "a dark coming-of-age drama." In November 2009 it was reported that Wasikowska is in talks to play Jane Eyre in Cary Fukunaga's adaptation of the novel.
